Sometimes it suuuuucks to be a grownup.
I got a nice bonus a few weeks ago, and ever since I've been fantasizing about how to spend it: A real, grownup bedroom set? Yeah, I've wanted that for a while. Down payment on a new car? Yes indeed, I want that. Long overdue big vacation (destination of *my* choosing)? I think I want that most of all.
Here's where the money's gone so far: Teeth cleaning for Tina (damn); deposit to IRA (double-damn); extra credit card payment (triple damn). The majority has gone into savings, and the secret, childish part of me believes I'll never see it again, and certainly not in the form of fun. I don't believe I'll get to choose how the money gets spent; I believe I'll get told.
hey - super responsible! You'll be so thrilled that you did pay yourself first. Maybe the car thing will work out after some more of that savings action!

I think it gets better as you get to be more of a grown up. It has for me. But all those responsibilities weigh heavy on the pocketbook. I agree with Kirsten and Kate G. You should do something fun with some of that money. Or perhaps set some of it aside toward the long-overdue big vacation.

I know how that goes, too. You just have to be the boss of your financial destiny. Go spend some of that money on something FUN right NOW before it all goes to responsible causes! Tina is a sweetie though, and you can't discount fresh smelling dog breath.

Let me raise my pom-pom in the air and gave you a big cheer for "paying yourself first." Seriously, you were a responsible Mom to Tina and a responsible partner to your financial health. It's time to raise a responsible martini in the air and toast yourself. It may not be fun right now, but it will be, never-you-fear.
